Shot blasting machine is extensively used for automated surface treatment and finishing of castings. In shot blasting processes the stream of shots is produced and formed by blasting turbines, making up a kinetic and powerful system comprising a separating rotor, an adapting sleeve, and a  propelling rotor equipped with blades. It is a surface treatment method using high-velocity steel abrasive. Shot blasting is a process through which it is possible to obtain high-quality cleaning and surface equipment for secondary finishing processes.

The shot blasting machine performance- i.e. the quality of shot (Aluminum Oxide Grit) arranged facades depends on the actual design and operational parameters of the unit whilst the importance of relevant parameters are connected with the geometry of turbine elements and the level of its combination with the separator system. The circulation of the blasting medium enhances the integrating factor of the process line,  starting from the hopper,  through the propeller turbine,  casting treatment,  division of a contaminated abrasive mixture, to its recycling and reuse.

Working of Shot Blasting Machine

In the shot blasting process, a stream of abrasive medium with the wanted kinetic energy is produced and propelled onto the surface to be used. The stream of the cleaning tool, being a mix of metal shots, is a dynamically variable system, involving an intensive and separated zone, as revealed by numerous studies.

The actual relationship of particular zones in the structure of the shot stream considerably changes the shot blasting efficiency. The greater the combined zone, the more effective the process. Other determinants of shot operation efficiency include:

  • satisfying the criteria bearing the design of blast tools,
  • properties of the washing agent which has to meet the special process requirements,
  • The optimal shape of the shot stream in the duration of its geometric, kinetic, and changing parameters,
  • the direction of the jet hitting the surface of the treated field

Parts of Shot Blasting Machine:

Shot blasting machine has 6 main parts are the following:-

  1. Blast wheel - The wheels are the backbone of the shot blasting machines. There is a number of wheels that are placed in the shot blasting machine, it depends on the type of task to be shot blasted. Apart from its efficiency & cleaning also depends on the character of the wheel, therefore, it should have a quality ingredient used in the machine for the effective shot blasting process.
  2. Cabinet - the shot blasting cabinet is involved in the articles that are to be managed in a closed, vibration-free blasting method. The cabinet is commonly made of string steel or another abrasive material, lined with wear-resistant alloy. To use a shot blasting machine positively one should do a private inspection of its door and air purifying Procedure.
  3. Work Handling Tool - it depends on the types of shot blasting machine you are working on as per your job requirement, also on the size & quality of the parts. If we talk about the Tumblast shot blasting machine, we have to look at the conveyor belt or rubber belt used in the machine should not get harmed during tumbling to protect efficient blasting. Meanwhile, Table type shot blasting machine parts must be placed again and again on the table to prove complete cleaning of the surface. Apart from it in a Hanger type machine sometimes parts get suspended on the trees hung, then special fixtures usually carried into the abrasive stream. We also have to see after its preservation timely for its effective use.
  4. The elevator of the Machine - the abrasive recovery system is produced at the bottom of the shot blasting machine cabinet and attached to the screw conveyor on-base of the elevator, which carries the separator also. The production rate of the machine may go down elevator would not work properly, therefore, one should know its function and maintenance which is required by the machine from time to time.
  5. Air Separator- When abrasive material infiltrates into the blast wheel, that must be cleaned in all contaminants for the fertile use of the machine, Cleaning of abrasive from the blast wheel is the foremost role of a separator in the shot blasting machine, so it should keep working correctly it the time of shot blasting method.
  6. Dust Collector - it is the most essential part of the shot blasting machine for filtration. A dust collector is to recover dust during the shot blasting process; one can also learn the uses of DC in the machine as per its name. The dust is normally full air from the separator & cabinet ventilation. Users should assure dust controllers' precise work during shot blasting for a pollution-free atmosphere and for the health of workers working in the industries.

Abrasive delivery method:

There are two ways of accelerating the steel shot:

By compressed air: This system is fit for lower production uses where the most flexibility is needed. These systems are very flexible in that the shot can be transferred horizontally through a rubber hose and Sand Blasting nozzle attachment. This enables use in the finishing processes of steel frames and weldments thereby restoring hand tools. Because of this, an air blasting machine for a product line is costly related to a centrifugal blasting machine.

For example to give a shot at a rate of 1100 kg per minute a 1650 Hp compressor and 33 workers are needed using 10 mm diameter nozzles delivering 6.5 kg/cm2. On the other hand, the same task using radial wheel turbines only needs a total of 100 Hp distributed to between one or a number of turbines housed in the same machine. Only one or two workers are needed for such a blasting machine

By centrifugal turbine: Centrifugal wheel blasting is the major general blast cleaning system as well as the most efficient and environmentally friendly process. The turbine produces abrasive shots by centrifugal force in a special and controlled way, speed, and quantity. The purpose of the turbine is similar to that of a fan or centrifugal pump. Shot blasting machines may use one or a number of turbines located in such a way that the abrasive blast design covers the entire surface of the element to be shot erased. The shape and size of the parts define the number of turbines used in a machine. The control of the turbine motor is based on the degree of cleaning wanted and the speed of the element.

Types of Shots used in Shot Blasting Machine

While shot blasting is most commonly associated with the use of small steel pellets or shots to blast the surface, several other types of shot blast materials are also employed.

Steel Shots -  In this method, little steel balls with diameters ranging from 1 to 6 mm are fired at high speeds against the surface to be prepared. The finished product is determined by the size of the balls. Smaller steel bullets produce a more polished finish, whilst bigger ones produce a rougher one.

Chilled Iron Grit - This is an angular, abrasive material that is used for general blast cleanings, such as removing oxides and coatings from ferrous castings and carbon steel. Blasting with chilled iron grit, on the other hand, is highly forceful and thus unsuitable for lighter metals like aluminum.

Steel Grit - Steel grit blasting is used for operations that demand severe cleaning, such as eliminating impurities from steel or any other metal.

What are the Applications & Uses of a Shot Blasting Machine?

  • Automobile
  • Foundry
  • Railway
  • Mold Industry
  • Shipping Industry
  • Bearing Industry

The Shot blasting Machine can be used for a variety of purposes:-

Foundry industry: In foundry factories, castings must be polished, and the best machine for this job is a shot blasting machine. Different types of machines are available for different levels of product policing and surface preparation. As a result, you can select a machine that meets your needs.

Mold industry: because molds are also used in castings, they require a smooth surface. A shot blasting machine is an excellent tool for polishing product surfaces. The best part is that it will not harm the products' surface or performance.

Steel profile companies: most steel profile companies, such as sheet steel companies, will have a lot of burrs on their surfaces, which will affect the surface and quality of the newly manufactured product. In that case, a shot blasting machine can expertly resolve all of these issues.

Shipbuilding industries: Steel sheets are the most common material used in the shipbuilding industry. Steel is prone to rust, which can have a significant impact on the quality and efficiency of shipbuilding operations. Cleaning rust is a difficult task that cannot be completed by hand. As a result, a shot blasting machine can ensure the quality of steel used in shipyards.

Automobile factory: Steel and other profile elements in automobile factories must be polished. However, every manufacturer strives to maintain the original surface, and shot blasting is the only option that does not compromise the steel's strength. In general, different types of shot blasting machines are required for different aspects of policing by most automobile elements. In that case, you have the option of using a roller blasting machine, a hook-type shot blasting machine, or a Tumblast shot blasting machine, among other options.

Motorcycle factories: There are both small and large components in motorcycle factories. For small components, we prefer a roller-type shot blasting machine. Roller-type shot blasting machines are best suited for large quantities of products.
